Reinhard Pummer s'intéresse, depuis ses études de docorat, à l'histoire des religions, notamment aux méthodes et à l'historique de la discipline. Il étudie depuis de nombreuses années une religion dérivée du Judaisme, le Samaritanisme. À l'instar du Christianisme, le Samaritanisme est né de la tradition biblique, il y a quelque deux mille ans pour devenir une religion à part entière. Aujourd'hui, il compte environ sept cents adhérents, qui vivent sur le mon Garizim de Palestine et dans une banlieue de Tel-Aviv en Israel.
Reinhard Pummer a publié ses recherches sur les débuts du Samaritanisme, ainsi que sur les Samaritains d'aujourd'hui. Il a notamment réuni une documentation illustrée des croyances et observances anciennes et modernes des Samaritains dans la série "Iconography of Religions". Il a établi le texte de contrats de mariage entre Samaritains, il a dressé une bibliographie des auteurs samaritains et rédigé une monographie sur la mention des Samaritains chez les premiers auteurs chrétiens.
